Ingredients for This Apple Cider Margarita Recipe

  • Apple Cider: The main ingredient to this fall-inspired margarita brings a cozy, harvest flavor that perfectly embodies the season. Fresh apple cider has a natural sweetness and a touch of tartness, making it a perfect base for this cocktail. I love apple cider as it really does have a warm flavor but still remains fresh and crisp.
  • Tequila: I went with blanco tequila because of its crisp, clean flavor. The light notes of agave in the tequila complement the sweetness of the apple cider without overpowering it. Blanco tequila also adds a touch of complexity, blending seamlessly with the tart lime and spicy cinnamon to create a well-balanced, refreshing drink.
  • Fresh Lime Juice: brightens up the drink with its tangy acidity and helps cut through the sweetness of the apple cider, giving the margarita that signature margarita tartness. Using fresh lime juice ensures a more vibrant, natural flavor compared to bottled lime juice, making your cider margarita zesty and full of life.
  • Cinnamon Stick: Synonymous with fall, adding a cinnamon stick to your margarita introduces a warm, spicy note that complements the apple cider beautifully. While optional, the cinnamon stick infuses the drink with a subtle spiced flavor as it sits, making it feel cozy and perfect for cool autumn nights. It’s also very cute and creates a beautiful presentation for this cocktail.
  • Maple Syrup: optional but highly recommended as it’s a natural sweetener that enhances the flavor of the apple cider. It brings a rich, earthy sweetness that balances the acidity of the lime and the spice of the cinnamon. Use as much or as little as you’d like as everyone’s sweetness is personal! Using maple syrup to coat the rim of your glass helps the cinnamon sugar stick while adding a hint of sweet, natural flavor. It’s a small step that makes a big difference in the overall taste and aesthetic of the drink.
  • All-Natural Ginger Beer: The ingredient you didn’t expect but totally need! Ginger beer is the secret ingredient that sets this margarita apart from the rest. The spicy, peppery kick of ginger beer adds an unexpected yet delightful twist to the traditional apple cider margarita. Its warmth and fizz elevate the drink, giving it a refreshing finish while enhancing the fall flavors of cinnamon and apple. Be sure to use all-natural ginger beer for the best taste and health benefits.
  • Cinnamon Sugar: A cinnamon sugar rim adds a fun and festive touch to your margarita glass. The combination of sweet sugar and warm cinnamon enhances the flavor of the drink with every sip. It also gives your apple cider margarita a beautiful presentation, making it perfect for holiday gatherings and fall festivities. Make your own cinnamon sugar by combining white sugar with cinnamon and mixing.
  • Apples & Cinnamon: Garnishing your apple cider margarita with fresh apple slices and cinnamon sticks not only adds visual appeal but also gives the drink an extra layer of fall flavor. The apples add a crisp, juicy touch, while the cinnamon stick continues to infuse the drink with its warm spice as you sip.

What Type of Apple Cider to Buy

When making this cider margarita recipe, opt for fresh, unfiltered apple cider to get the most flavor. Avoid apple juice, as it tends to be overly sweet and lacks the depth of flavor you want in this margarita. Fresh Apple Cider is everywhere these days and you likely can find it at your local grocer.

How to Make a Margarita with Apple Cider

Prepare the Glass

Dip the rim of your serving glass into maple syrup, then coat it with cinnamon sugar for a festive touch.

Mix the Drink

In a cocktail shaker, combine 3 oz fresh apple cider, 1.5 oz tequila, the juice of one fresh lime, a cinnamon stick, and maple syrup (if using). Add ice and shake well.

Assemble & Garnish

Fill your cinnamon-sugar-rimmed glass with ice, pour in the margarita mixture, and top it off with 3 oz all-natural ginger beer. Add apple slices and/or a cinnamon stick for garnish, and enjoy!

How to Prepare Apple Cider Margaritas For a Crowd

Hosting a party this season? You’re now equipped with the perfect recipe that is super easy to batch for a crowd. Simply multiply the ingredients by the number of guests and mix it up in a large pitcher. You can rim each guest’s glass with cinnamon sugar and let them garnish their drinks with apple slices and cinnamon sticks. This recipe also works great in an apple cider margarita pitcher for easy serving – just be sure to stir well before pouring!

What is the Difference Between Apple Juice and Apple Cider?

While both apple juice and apple cider come from apples, there are some key differences. Apple cider is typically unfiltered, which means it retains more of the apple’s natural flavor and nutrients. It’s also less sweet and has a more complex, tart taste compared to apple juice. In this cider margarita recipe, using apple cider ensures your cocktail is packed with authentic fall flavors.

Is There A Lot of Sugar in Apple Cider?

Apple cider does contain natural sugars from the apples, but it’s much less processed than apple juice. If you’re concerned about sugar content, you can adjust the sweetness by skipping the maple syrup or skipping the cinnamon sugar rim. This way, you can enjoy a delicious apple cider margarita without worrying about added sugars.

Notes

  • I used an all-natural store-bought apple cider, you can also use fresh apple with a touch of cinnamon!
  • Cinnamon Sugar: 1 cup granulated sugar, 2 tsp ground cinnamon. You only need 1 tbsp for this recipe.
  • If you like things on the sweeter side or if you’re not doing the cinnamon sugar rim, I suggest adding the optional 1 tsp of maple syrup to this recipe. I loved the balance without but I know tastes differ! So adjust to your own liking!
