Chunky Citrus Pomegranate Guacamole Recipe

Guacamole is probably one of my favorite dips ever. It’s easy to prepare, packed with fresh ingredients and never a disappointment. I couldn’t help myself when I thought about the fact that citrus season is one of my favorite times to experiment with classic recipes, but give them a citrus twist. That is exactly how this Citrus Pomegranate Guacamole was born! You know how sometimes you’re looking around your house for something to eat, but nothing appeals to you – that is what it was like for me when I made this dip. I had sumo citrus on the counter, a pomegranate that I needed to open up immediately, and a few avocados. The colour of each ingredient alone was enough to get me excited, so I knew I had to add them all together!

Y’all, trust me when I say this – it is the BEST guac I’ve ever eaten. My Citrus Pomegranate Guacamole takes the creamy goodness of traditional guac and totally levels it up with bright citrusy notes and sweet, juicy crunch from fresh pomegranate seeds. Now, fruit is not a new thing to add to guacamole, I see so many made with mango, but I don’t know what came over me to consider adding pomegranate – I will say the food gods were on my side! It’s the perfect balance of tangy, creamy, and just a little sweet. This vibrant dip is beyond delicious and absolutely beautiful — the ultimate showstopper for your next brunch, BBQ, or Cinco de Mayo party.

Chunky Citrus Pomegranate Guacamole Ingredients

To make this pomegranate guacamole recipe, you’ll need:

  • Ripe avocados: Creamy, dreamy, and the base of any good guac.
  • Sumo citrus: Juicy, tangy, and perfectly sweet. If you can’t find sumo, use mandarin, tangerine or sweet orange.
  • Pomegranate arils: For pops of color and juicy sweetness.
  • Cilantro: For that herby freshness.
  • Red onion: Adds sharp flavor and crunch. Use yellow onion if you prefer a more mild punch.
  • Garlic: Because duh, garlic makes everything better.
  • Jalapeño: Optional, but highly recommended for a little kick.
  • Lime juice: Balances the richness of the avocado.

How To Deseed A Pomegranate

This is surprisingly easy, and there are a ton of tutorials all over the internet. People get all worked up about doing this because it’s a little messy and takes more than three minutes, but honestly, fresh arils out of the pomegranate cannot be beat! Simply, cut the pomegranate in half horizontally and hold one half cut-side down over a bowl. Use a wooden spoon to whack the back and release the seeds. Scoop out any stray white membrane. You can do this in a bowl if you worry about staining your clothes or fingers. That’s it!

How To Make Pomegranate Guacamole

This easy pomegranate guacamole comes together in about 10 minutes flat. No fancy equipment, no fuss. It’s a simple guacamole with a fruit twist that makes it feel like a whole new dip. Mash the avocados with the lime juice, citrus juice, salt, and pepper until you reach your desired consistency (I like it chunky!). Add in chopped onion, garlic, cilantro, diced citrus, jalapeño, and most of the pomegranate arils. Stir well to combine. If you’re making this ahead of time, just cover it tightly with plastic wrap pressed against the guac to keep it from browning.

Serving the Pomegranate Seed Guacamole

Serve your guacamole with pomegranate alongside:

  • Tortilla chips (duh)
  • Crunchy veggies
  • Plantain chips
  • On top of toast (do it!)
  • Or even dolloped over tacos or grain bowls

What Makes This Pomegranate Guacamole Great

This guacamole with pomegranate is everything you love about a traditional guacamole, creamy, zesty, and craveable, but with an upgrade. The citrus gives it bright, tangy depth, and the pomegranate seeds bring a juicy crunch that makes every bite exciting. It’s perfect for parties, but also fancy enough to serve at holiday gatherings, and simple enough to whip up on a random Tuesday.

Citrus Pomegranate Guacamole FAQ

Can I use bottled lime juice? Fresh is best, but in a pinch, bottled will do.

Can I make this guacamole ahead of time?  Yes! Just press plastic wrap directly onto the surface to prevent browning.

What if I can’t find sumo citrus?  Use mandarin oranges or any sweet citrus variety.

Can I use green pomegranate seeds?  Ripe red ones are ideal for color and sweetness.

Pomegranate Guacamole Tips

  • Use ripe, but not mushy, avocados.
  • Don’t skip the citrus! It keeps the guac vibrant and fresh.
  • Add jalapeño to taste – a little heat balances the sweetness.
  • Make just before serving for the freshest flavor.

Servings 4 servings

Equipment

  • knife

Ingredients

  • 4 large Haas avocados ripe
  • 1 sumo citrus peeled, finely diced
  • 1 cup pomegranate arils divided
  • ½ cup cilantro chopped
  • ¼ large red onion finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • ½-1 tsp pink salt
  • pinch of black pepper
  • 1 tbsp sumo citrus juice
  • limes juiced
  • 1 jalapeño pepper seeds removed, finely diced

Instructions

  • Start by mashing the avocado with the lime juice, sumo citrus juice, salt and pepper with a masher or fork until you reach your desired consistency. (I like a few avo chunks!)
  • Next, add the diced sumo citrus (saving a few pieces for garnish) 3/4 cup of the pomegranate arils, jalapeño, cilantro, garlic, and onion and mix well.
  • Scoop the guacamole into a serving bowl and top with the remaining pomegranate arils, extra sumo citrus pieces and cilantro.
  • Serve with tortilla chips, crackers or veggies. ENJOY

Notes

I opted to use Sumo citrus in this recipe, as they were in season and the sweetness of a Sumo citrus is undeniably the best! If Sumo citrus is not in season, you could absolutely use mandarin or a sweet orange.
