There’s something so comforting about a warm mug of golden milk. This golden milk recipe is my take on the classic turmeric latte, made with creamy oat milk, warming spices, vanilla, and honey.
But there’s one ingredient that makes my version a little different: Sumo citrus juice.
If you’ve never thought about adding citrus to golden milk, I know it might sound a little unexpected. But Sumo citrus is naturally sweet and has that lovely mandarin-like flavor that works surprisingly well with the turmeric and warm spices. It adds a subtle brightness without overpowering the cozy flavors you expect from a turmeric latte.
And because Sumo citrus is a source of vitamin C, it adds a little something extra to this already delicious drink.
The result is a creamy, fragrant, perfectly spiced dairy-free golden milk with a beautiful frothy top. It’s the kind of drink that makes you want to curl up with a blanket and take your time enjoying it.
It’s dairy-free. Oat milk makes a creamy, naturally sweet base without any dairy.
It has a delicious citrus twist. The Sumo citrus juice adds a subtle sweetness and brightness that pairs beautifully with the warm spices.
It’s made with simple ingredients. Turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, vanilla, and honey create plenty of flavor without needing a complicated ingredient list.
It’s wonderfully cozy. This is a warm drink made for slow mornings, chilly evenings, or whenever you want something comforting in a mug.
The frothy top makes it feel special. A handheld milk frother takes just a few seconds to create that beautiful latte-style finish.
Oat milk gives this golden milk its creamy texture and works especially well with the naturally sweet citrus juice and warm spices. Use your favorite oat milk for this recipe.
This is the unexpected ingredient that makes my version different. Sumo citrus has a naturally sweet, mandarin-like flavor that blends beautifully with the turmeric and spices. It adds a subtle citrus brightness while still letting the cozy flavors of the golden milk shine.
Turmeric gives golden milk its signature golden color and earthy flavor. It’s the ingredient that makes this drink instantly recognizable as a turmeric latte.
These warming spices give the drink its cozy, fragrant flavor. Ground ginger and cinnamon provide the base, while whole clove adds another layer of spice as everything gently simmers together.
Vanilla rounds out the spices, while raw honey adds a touch of sweetness. Since citrus can vary in sweetness, adjust the honey to your taste.
A small pinch of black pepper and nutmeg adds just enough depth without overwhelming the other flavors.
Start by adding the oat milk, Sumo citrus juice, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, whole clove, nutmeg, black pepper, vanilla, and honey to a saucepan.
Bring the mixture to a boil, then lower the heat and let it gently simmer for 5 minutes. This gives the spices time to infuse into the milk and citrus mixture.
Next, remove the saucepan from the heat and strain the mixture through a fine metal sieve. This removes the whole cloves and any larger pieces of spice, leaving you with a smooth golden milk.
Return the strained mixture to the saucepan and warm it gently over low heat.
For that beautiful frothy latte-style top, use a handheld milk frother while the mixture warms. This step is optional, but it gives the golden milk an extra creamy and café-style finish.
Pour into your favorite mug and serve immediately.
Adjust the sweetness to taste. Start with 1 tablespoon of raw honey, then add more if you prefer a sweeter turmeric latte.
Don’t skip the straining step. Because this recipe uses whole cloves and several spices, straining creates a much smoother drink.
Keep the heat gentle after straining. You only need to warm the golden milk again before serving.
Froth it while it’s warm. A handheld frother creates a beautiful layer of foam and makes this feel more like a true turmeric latte.
Use fresh spices when possible. Fresh, flavorful spices make a noticeable difference in a simple recipe like this.
Golden milk has a warm, lightly earthy flavor from the turmeric, balanced by cinnamon, ginger, and clove. The oat milk gives it a creamy base, while vanilla and honey add sweetness.
In this version, the Sumo citrus juice adds a subtle fruity brightness that makes the flavors feel lighter and more balanced. It doesn’t taste like you’re drinking a glass of orange juice with turmeric, it simply adds a lovely citrus note in the background.
Yes! You can make the golden milk ahead of time and store any leftovers in an airtight jar in the refrigerator.
When you’re ready to enjoy it, gently warm it in a saucepan over low heat and froth it again before serving.
Yes. The terms are often used interchangeably. Golden milk is traditionally a warm drink made with turmeric and milk or a milk alternative, while “turmeric latte” is another common name for the same type of drink.
Yes. This recipe is made with oat milk, making it completely dairy-free.
Absolutely. Oat milk is my choice for its creamy texture, but you can use another milk or dairy-free milk alternative if you prefer.
Yes. I use raw honey, but you can substitute your preferred sweetener and adjust the amount to taste.
You can, although I love the subtle depth that a pinch adds to the finished drink. It also helps with the absorption of the turmeric benefits.
