What Is a Shamrock Shake?

If you don’t live in the US, you might be asking WTF is a Shamrock Shake? Nothing says St. Patrick’s Day quite like a Shamrock Shake! This creamy, minty, and vibrantly green milkshake is a seasonal favorite that many eagerly await every March. It’s a McDonald’s classic in the US, but what if you could enjoy it year-round? With this easy copycat Shamrock Shake recipe, you can whip up your version at home anytime!

Homemade Shamrock Shake Recipe

Better than McDonald’s – I said it and I mean it! This Copycat Shamrock Shake recipe is by far more delicious than anything you’d ever have to wait in line for. This limited-time-only McDonald’s Shamrock Shake is a drink that so many Americans wait for every year around St. Patrick’s Day. I don’t even know if it’s available in every state, and until I moved to California, I truthfully had no idea this existed. I’ve asked my friends across borders and it seems like this is the only country enjoying this drink, so I thought, what better than to share my rendition so everyone I love, everywhere can enjoy this creamy mint-flavored milkshake.

As you know by now, I am all about themed food and St. Patrick’s Day is no exception! I may not be Irish but I definitely can get down with some green themed fun. Last week I shared my Luck Charms Martini with you all and of course I had to make something “healthy” and alcohol free (however if you pour a little something something in there – I won’t judge you!) Enjoy this Shamrock Shake whenever the desire strikes because I bet you – try it once and you will want it again. Happy sipping!

Shamrock Shake Ingredients

To make this easy Shamrock Shake recipe, you’ll need:

  • Vanilla ice cream: Classic vanilla bean ice cream creates the creamiest shake. You could truly use whatever ice cream you want, vanilla, dairy free coconut, French vanilla. The options are endless! Use whatever you have on hand that is a bit more neutral.
  • Milk: Use a milk that you already have in the fridge; whether it’s whole milk, oat milk or coconut milk. The thicker the better!
  • Cremè de Menthe: This mint syrup is perfect for giving the iconic color and adding that vibrant mint flavor. If you don’t have that, use a few drops of peppermint extract and a green food dye.
  • Whipped cream: No Shamrock Shake is complete without a swirl on top!
  • Chocolate syrup: Optional but mint and chocolate are kind of like a beautiful love story!
  • Green maraschino cherries & sprinkles: For an extra festive touch! Also optional but so very cute.

How to Make a Shamrock Shake

Making a homemade Shamrock Shake is ridiculously simple. Here’s how:

Blend Everything

Add vanilla ice cream, milk, peppermint extract, and green food coloring to a blender until combined.

Serve & Enjoy

Pour into glasses, top with whipped cream, and add a cherry + sprinkles! Sip & enjoy!

Shamrock Shake Variations

  • Chocolate Shamrock Shake: Add a drizzle of chocolate syrup or blend in chocolate chips.
  • Boozy Shamrock Shake: Spike it with Baileys Irish Cream for a fun adult version.
  • Protein Shamrock Shake: Swap out ice cream for vanilla protein powder and frozen bananas. This may change the flavor slightly but the idea is the same.
  • Oreo Shamrock Shake: I saw this a lot on the internet and I have a feeling McDonald’s might serve this as a McFlurry. All you need to do is crumble some oreos and mix them in!
