What is Cracker Candy?

Cracker candy, in this recipe also known as Valentine’s Crack, is a simple yet addictive treat made by layering crackers (or your cracker of choice) with homemade toffee, baking it to golden perfection, and topping it with chocolate chips, white chocolate or whatever your heart desires. There are so many different versions of cracker candy and this one has love written all over it! Make this crunchy, caramelized candy with the perfect balance of salty and sweet.

Valentine’s Cracker Candy Ingredients

To make this easy cracker candy, you’ll need:

  • Sourdough rye thins (or cracker of choice): The most popular cracker for cracker candy is actually saltine crackers but I wanted to make this a touch more healthy so I went with rye thins. You can truly use whatever cracker you’d like just make sure it is a complimentary flavor to chocolate!
  • Butter: Essential for making rich, buttery toffee. Use dairy free butter if you’d like.
  • Brown sugar: Necessary to make the butter toffee! The brown sugar will melt into the butter to create a luscious caramel layer.
  • White chocolate: Provides a smooth, creamy topping. Almond bark works as well.
  • Coconut oil: Helps melt the chocolate for a glossy, even consistency.
  • Pink candy melts: Adds a festive Valentine’s touch. If you are making these cracker candy’s for another holiday use different colors!
  • Strawberry jam or spread: Gives the candy a fruity, slightly tart balance.
  • Assorted Valentine’s sprinkles: Because every holiday treat needs a little sparkle! Use whatever colors you’d like.
  • Heart-shaped marshmallows: The cutest finishing touch for a festive Valentine’s theme. if you can’t find heart shaped marshmallows – you can totally use regular mini marshmallows!

How to Make Cracker Candy

Making cracker candy is easy, and the results are absolutely delicious! Here’s how:

Preheat and prepare

Prepare your pan and cover a baking sheet with aluminum foil, then lay the crackers or sourdough rye thins in a single layer on the pan. Set aside.

Make the caramel layer

In a saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar over medium heat until bubbling and smooth, about 10 minutes. Spread the caramel evenly over the cracker base using a spatula, then bake for 10-15 minutes.

Melt the chocolate

While the caramel layer bakes, melt the white chocolate chips with coconut oil and melt the pink candy melts in separate bowls. Use a double boiler or microwave in short intervals, stirring in between.

Top and swirl

Pour the melted white chocolate over the caramel base and smooth it out. Add small circles of strawberry jam and pink candy melts, then swirl them using a chopstick or butter knife to create a marble effect. Sprinkle with Valentine’s sprinkles and marshmallow hearts for an extra festive touch.

Chill and break

Refrigerate for at least 1 hour until set. Now, it’s time to CRACK into this irresistible treat! Break the crack into whatever shapes you’d like, you can make them small or large shards!

Ways to Customize The Toppings of Your Cracker Candy

The best part about cracker candy is how easy it is to customize! Here are a few fun variations:

  • Chocolate lovers: Swap white chocolate for semi-sweet chocolate chips or add a drizzle of dark chocolate for extra richness.
  • Nutty crunch: Sprinkle with chopped pecans or almonds before chilling for added texture.
  • Holiday twist: Swap pink candy melts for green and red to make this a Christmas cracker candy or use pastel colors for Easter.
  • Salted caramel: Add a pinch of sea salt on top for an elevated sweet-and-salty combo.

Cracker Candy FAQs

Why Is My Cracker Candy Chewy?

If your cracker candy turns out too chewy, it may not have baked long enough. The brown sugar and butter need enough time to fully caramelize into a crisp toffee. Try baking for an extra 2-3 minutes, but be careful not to burn it!

How To Store Cracker Candy

Once fully set, store your cracker candy in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week. If you prefer a firmer texture, store it in the fridge for a delicious chilled crunch.
