How To Make a Charcuterie Board

Whether you’re preparing a Valentine’s Day Charcuterie Board, hosting a Galentine’s gathering, planning an intimate date night or truly any special occasion; this spread is the perfect combination of flavors, textures, and visual appeal. A charcuterie board isn’t just a snack—it’s an experience, filled with cured meats, cheeses, fresh fruit, nuts, and crackers that come together for an unforgettable bite. The best part? You can customize it with your favorite ingredients and change it up for any occasion! Let’s dive into this charcuterie board recipe and create the ultimate show-stopping spread.

What is Charcuterie?

Charcuterie (pronounced shahr-KOO-tuh-ree) refers to the art of assembling cured meats, cheeses, crackers, and accompaniments into a beautiful spread. Originating in France, traditional charcuterie boards focused on cured meats like prosciutto, salami, and pâté, but today’s versions can be quite extravagant and are often filled with cheese, nuts, fresh fruit, sauces, and more for a well-balanced snack board.

When Should I Serve a Charcuterie Board?

The question is when shouldn’t you?! Charcuterie boards are perfect for any occasion! They make fantastic party appetizers; whether it’s a birthday, bridal shower, or game night, a cheese board is always a crowd-pleaser. You can also make them the centrepiece of any holiday gathering like Christmas, Thanksgiving, or New Year’s Eve – it’s really simple to set them up with themes (we will get into that!). You can also make a charcuterie board for a simple night in with just a handful of your favorites.

Ingredient Ideas for a Charcuterie Board

The best charcuterie boards include a variety of flavors and textures. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Prosciutto
  • Salami (Genoa, Soppressata, Calabrese)

  • Mortadella

Assortment of Cheeses (3-6 types)

Go for a mix of soft, hard, and flavored cheeses:

How To Make A Charcuterie Board

Step 1: Choose Your Board & Theme

Start with a wooden board, marble slab, or a heart-shaped board for a fun Valentine’s Day like this one here!

Step 2: Prepare Your Cheeses & Meats

  • Make bologna roses: Slice 4–5 pieces of Lebanon Bologna in half and layer them in a straight line. Roll them tightly to create a spiral shape and fan out the edges to mimic rose petals. Secure with an appetizer skewer.
  • Slice cheeses: Cut cheeses into different shapes and sizes for variety.
  • Pour dips into small bowls or ramekins for easy serving.

Step 3: Arrange with Love

  • Start with larger items like cheese, crackers, and meats.
  • Layer in dips and small bowls to create dimension.
  • Fill in gaps with fresh fruit, nuts, and herbs to complete the look.
  • Serve with sliced bread on the side for variety.

Step 4: Serve & Enjoy!

Pair your charcuterie board with a glass of rosé, champagne, or one of my favorite mocktails and cocktails for the ultimate Valentine’s treat!

What Do You Do With Leftover Charcuterie?

If you have leftovers (which I highly doubt) you can totally make sandwiches, use leftovers as items for a salad or throw them into an omelette.

What Are Some Popular Charcuterie Themes?

Charcuterie boards can be customized for any season or celebration! Here are a few ideas:

  • Valentine’s Day Charcuterie Board – Heart-shaped crackers, pink cheeses, chocolate-covered strawberries.
  • Christmas Charcuterie Board – Red and green fruits, brie with cranberry sauce, and rosemary for a festive touch.
  • Halloween Charcuterie Board – Orange cheddar, dark chocolate, black grapes, and pumpkin seeds.
  • Brunch Charcuterie Board – Croissants, fresh berries, cream cheese, and smoked salmon.
  • Summer Picnic Charcuterie Board – Light cheeses, fresh watermelon, and honey drizzled over nuts.
