Equipment

  • 1 oven
  • 1 square glass baking dish

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 2 1/2 cups  all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp  baking powder
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 cups cold buttermilk
  • 1 1/2-2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, freshly shredded
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped, optional

For the Cheddar Bay Butter Topping

  • 2 tbsp butter, melted
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, garlic powder, and salt.
  • Fold in the shredded sharp cheddar and parsley until evenly distributed. Pour in the cold buttermilk and gently stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Melt 1 stick of butter in a microwave-safe bowl and pour it into a 9x9-inch baking dish.
  • Pour the biscuit dough directly into the dish of melted butter. Gently spread it into an even layer with a spatula. The dough should sit on top of the melted butter rather than being mixed into it.
  • Lightly score the top of the dough into 9 squares with a butter knife.
  • Bake for approximately 25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the edges are crisp.
  • While the biscuits are hot, whisk together the melted butter, garlic powder, and fresh parsley for the topping. Brush generously over the biscuits.
  • Allow the biscuits to cool slightly, then cut along the scored lines and serve warm.

Notes

Freshly shredded sharp cheddar is recommended for the best flavor and melt
Cold buttermilk helps create tender biscuits.
Be careful not to overmix the dough. Stir just until the ingredients are combined.
The biscuit dough is intentionally placed directly on top of the melted butter rather than mixed with it.
The melted butter should cover the bottom of the baking dish before adding the dough.
Lightly scoring the dough before baking makes the finished biscuits easier to portion.
For a festive serving option, serve warm with seasoned butter, gravy, or honey for dipping.
